At the post-fight press conference, Dana White confirmed what many fans have been speculating about for months. He revealed that he had spoken to Jon Jones, the UFC heavyweight champion, the previous night, and Jones announced his retirement.

Dana shared this news with the press after UFC Baku. The UFC has since confirmed that Tom Aspinall, who previously held the interim belt, is now the official heavyweight champion.

The heavyweight division can now move forward, as it has been in a stalemate since last November when Jones last defended his title against Stipe Miocic.

Fans have been urging Dana to strip Jones of the title for months, accusing him of ducking a fight with Aspinall. Aspinall has been relentless in his pursuit of this matchup, yet Jones has consistently dismissed him, offering various excuses. Jones has stated that Aspinall isn’t worth fighting, claiming he doesn’t excite him and that the fight would do nothing for his legacy.

Jones is a master of mind games, and Dana is a master of promotion. Could this be a ploy for Jones to return for an even bigger superfight? Or is this truly the end for Jonny Bones Jones?

Jones has had a legendary career like no other, and many consider him the GOAT. If this is indeed the end, does his legacy suffer for not fighting Aspinall?
